Holiday Social on Thursday, December 9th

The EES Holiday Social is just around the corner... This year's event will be held on Thursday, December 9th in Ustler Hall from 7-10pm. A catered buffet will be served. Graduating students will be recognized and receive gifts from the department. Undergraduates, graduate students, faculty, and staff are all encouraged to attend. Guests are also welcome.

Deadline for CoE Undergraduate Scholarships is Approaching

The application deadline for the College of Engineering Undergraduate Scholarship Program is December 3, 2010 at 5:00 p.m. Applications may be submitted via the following link:

GIS Day @ Smather's Library on Nov. 17th

Wednesday, November 17, the George A. Smathers Libraries at the University of Florida will host an event showcasing the use of geographic information systems (GIS). The event will be hosted in Room 1A of the Smathers Library and will include speakers, posters, exhibits, demonstrations, and cake. Some of the topics being presented are how GIS was used to help with the Gulf Oil Spill and how they are using GIS to track diseases. For more information, visit: http://www.uflib.ufl.edu/gisday/.

Adopt-A-Street Clean-up, Satchel's Lunch, & SEE Meeting

Join the Society of Environmental Engineers (SEE) this Saturday, November 6th for our second Adopt-A-Road clean-up of the semester. Our street is NE 15th St (between NE53rd Ave and NE 39th Ave). Gloves, vests, picks, and bags will be provided. After the clean-up, we will head over to Satchel's Pizza to reward everyone for waking up early on a (likely cold) Saturday. SEE will provide the pizza, as this lunch will also serve as our next SEE meeting. Please RSVP by Friday at 7pm by e-mailing erinw@ufl.edu. Please note in your e-mail if you would like to carpool to the site from campus.

Free FE Exam Reviews

For everyone who is taking the upcoming FE exam in October, the following review sessions have been planned by the Society of Environmental Engineers (SEE) in coordination with the Department of Environmental Engineering Sciences:

Wednesday @ 4pm: EPA Info Session with UF Alumnae, Dr. Kimberly Cochran

Interested in Public Service and the Environment? UF alumnae Dr. Kimberly Cochran, an environmental engineer at the U.S. EPA’s Office of Resource Conservation and Recovery, will speak about her experiences as an EPA employee, her current projects, as well as current employment opportunities.

Back-to-Black Departmental Social this Friday at 9pm

It is a potluck and cocktail party style social featuring music, food, drinks, and new friends. Semi-formal attire is requested. This event will be held at the Cottage Grove Community Clubhouse, located off of 13th Street, just south of Williston Road on the right (click here for a map). Guests are encouraged to bring appetizers, drinks, wine, etc.

SEE Officer's Meeting Thursday @ 6pm in NEB386; No General Meeting

There will be a planning meeting for SEE officers tomorrow, September 23rd, in NEB386 at 6pm. A general SEE meeting for this date has been canceled due to this week's career fair and other activities competing for our members' time. Although this meeting is for officers, any SEE member is welcome to join us to discuss upcoming SEE events and activities. Please continue to check www.ufsee.org and the SEE facebook group for upcoming SEE events if you are not participating in this meeting. SEE's next general meeting is planned for October 16th. Also, please don't forget to add the "Black to Black" departmental social to your calendar for October 1st. More information regarding this event is available in an earlier announcement.

2) Benton Engineering Council Homecoming Float – Ongoing until Friday, October 15th

The construction of the 2010 BEC Homecoming float is underway now. 3) UF 2010 Career Showcase Engineering Day – Tuesday, September 21st

Engineering Day 2010 will be from 12-9pm @ Reitz (2nd floor). This is a great way for students to network with companies before the Technical Day at Showcase. Company Recruiters will be conducting panel discussions, information, and networking sessions. This year, over 20 companies will be attending, including Schlumberger, Procter and Gamble, Siemens, Nielson, and Southern Company to name a few. 4) Intel Information Sessions – Tuesday, September 21st

Intel is hiring students for internships and full-time employment with a background in environmental engineering at the Bachelors, Masters, and PhD levels. 5) SWE Evening with Industry – Wednesday, September 22nd

The Society of Women Engineers is hosting an “Evening with Industry”. It will take place from 5pm to 7pm, after the technical day of career fair in Ustler Hall (located between Murphree and the Student Rec Center. Evening with Industry allows engineering students to meet with recruiters they spoke with during career fair on a more personal level to network and attain an internship, co-op or profession. Bring a resume in case the recruiters ask you for them but there will be a resume CD that you can include your resume on. Food and refreshments provided. If you would like to submit your resume to be included on the CD or have any questions please send a pdf version of your resume or send questions to ewi.sweuf@gmail.com by Monday 9/20 by 5 pm.

6) UF Solar Decathlon Europe Presentation - Friday, September 24th @ 7pm

Laura Ettedgui, a recent UF graduate of architecture and civil engineering and a participant in the 2010 Solar Decathlon this summer, will be giving a short presentation of the University of Florida’s 2010 Solar Decathlon Europe experience at PechaKucha Night next Friday, Sept. 24 at Volta Coffee downtown, 7 pm. PechaKucha is a condensed presentation format, allowing a variety of creative types to present 20 slides with only 20 seconds per slide.

7) Gainesville Solar Tour – Sunday, October 3rd

The UF Chapter of the American Solar Energy Society (ASES) will host the annual Gainesville Solar Tour on October 3rd from 12pm-2pm. This ASES sponsored tour will bring together more than 5,000 homes, schools and businesses – across the U.S. and locally – to showcase the solar and energy efficiency technologies that are being employed nationally. 3) Fulbright Nexus Program

The Fulbright Regional Network for Applied Research (NEXUS) Program will bring
together a network of junior scholars, professionals and mid-career applied

will spend up to one year engaged in collaborative thinking, analysis,
problem-solving and multi-disciplinary research in one of three inter-related

Panel Discussion on Impact from BP Oil Spill Tonight

The impact of the BP oil spill on the region’s land and water resources will be the subject of an expert panel tonight at the University of Florida’s Bob Graham Center for Public Service.

“The Impact to the Land and the Sea from the Gulf Oil Disaster” will take place at 7 p.m. in Pugh Hall’s Ocora and will feature three of the Sunshine State’s leading experts on coastal habitats, the Everglades, the economy and the Gulf of Mexico.

This discussion will also be streamed live online.

Join SEE for a Breakfast Tailgate at Black Hall

Come out this Saturday for the First Tailgate of the Year, hosted by SEE!!! Since it is an early game, breakfast will be served on the Black Hall Porch from 10 am to Noon! Come out, relax, socialize, and prepare for an exciting season of Gator football. Food, non-alcoholic refreshments, and a cooler full of ice will be provided.

A Message from the SEE Football Chair...

Hello Gator Football Fans!

The EES Football Block is back for the 2010 season! I will be collecting student IDs to add members to the block during the first week of classes and will be on the Black Hall porch every game day to distribute the tickets.

If you (or your friends) are interested in joining the block and have student season tickets, you can (1) get a hold of me, (2) leave your ID in the envelope in the SEE mailbox in Black Hall during the first week of classes, or (3) stop by the stadium student ticket window and sign up (we are block SEE).

We need at least 25 people to keep our block, so sign up today!

FE Exam Dates

EES Students: Did you know the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam (F.E.) is a graduation requirement for all environmental engineering majors at UF? The EES department advises students to take this exam in their final semester at UF.

The F.E. exam is typically offered twice per year-- in April and again in October. The next test dates are: 10/30/10, 04/09/11, 10/29/11, 04/14/12, and 10/27/12. You should note that the application to take this test must be submitted several months prior to the test date.
